The Farmer and His Apples: A Lesson in Generosity and Stewardship

A modern parable about generosity and biblical stewardship through the lens of the farmer’s gift.

Jesus often taught with parables—simple, relatable stories that carried deep spiritual meaning. One such modern parable, “The Farmer and His Apples,” invites us to reflect on our hearts toward generosity and what it means to steward God’s gifts well.

In this story, a farmer rises early and picks a batch of apples from his orchard. He visits his first neighbor and generously offers the fruit. Delighted, the neighbor counts ten apples—exactly what his wife needs for her apple cobbler. But when the farmer asks if he could take one apple to eat on his way home, the neighbor declines. He insists that all ten are required for the recipe.

The next day, the farmer picks another batch and visits a second neighbor. This man enjoys apples on his front porch swing and gratefully accepts the gift. When the farmer asks for one apple for the road, the neighbor hands him an already-bitten one, saying, “You can finish this one.”

On the third day, the farmer visits yet another neighbor. This one also has plans for the apples—his wife is making a pie that calls for ten. But when the farmer asks for one apple, this neighbor doesn’t hesitate. He reaches into the bag and offers two apples.

Each neighbor received the same gift—ten apples. But their responses to the farmer’s request revealed the posture of their hearts.

  • The first neighbor was unwilling to part with even one apple, clinging tightly to what he’d been given.

  • The second neighbor gave, but only from what he no longer valued.

  • The third neighbor gave generously, beyond what was asked.

This parable mirrors how we manage what God has entrusted to us. Our finances, time, talents, and resources are like the apples—blessings from the Lord. The question isn’t just how much we’ve been given, but how we respond when we’re asked to give.

At Christ-Centered Investing, we believe that true financial stewardship is not about accumulating more, but about living with open hands. Contentment isn’t found in having the perfect number of apples—it’s found in trusting God with what we have and choosing to bless others.

Whether you’re nearing retirement or managing your household budget, the principle remains the same: generosity is a response to God’s grace, not a condition of abundance.

Let’s be like the third neighbor—quick to give, slow to count, and joyful in our stewardship.

At Christ-Centered Investing, we’re here to help you grow in stewardship, find contentment in your finances, and experience the joy of generosity.
