Everyone wants a good return on their investments. It’s a principle that makes sense—when we invest time, money, or energy into something, we naturally hope to see it grow, yield results, or provide security. But what if we’re focused on the wrong kind of return? What if we’re investing in the wrong kingdom?
In Matthew 6:19–20, Jesus gives us this challenging reminder during His Sermon on the Mount:
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
These words highlight a powerful truth: earthly treasures are fragile. Markets crash. Homes can be broken into. Inflation chips away at value. And in response to this fragility, we often spend more—on safes, security systems, and insurance—trying to protect what we’ve accumulated. It’s no wonder so many live with anxiety around money.
But Christ offers a different perspective. One grounded not in fear or scarcity, but in eternal purpose. He reminds us that while it’s wise to work, save, and invest for the future (and Scripture supports wise stewardship), even those efforts are ultimately finite. Instead, we are invited to embrace a more enduring vision: investing in eternity.
So, what does that look like?
It means using our financial resources, time, and energy to further the mission of God’s Kingdom. We’re called to invest in generosity, justice, and compassion—qualities that reflect the heart of Christ and never lose their value. These are the kinds of investments that produce eternal returns: changed lives, strengthened communities, and hope shared with others.
In the financial world, we measure investments by Return on Investment (ROI). Did our effort produce gain? But if our earthly ROI comes at the cost of our integrity, or tears down others in the pursuit of gain, then what kind of return is that really?
God consistently calls His people to be different. To shine light in the darkness. To live with purpose and clarity. And that includes how we steward what He’s entrusted to us.
This week, take time to reflect:
- Where are you storing your treasures?
- Are your investments—of time, money, and energy—aligned with eternal values?
As you evaluate your financial decisions and life direction, consider how you might realign your priorities with God’s Kingdom. Not only for confidence today, but for the sake of impact that lasts far beyond this life.
