What is a tithe, and why should I give my money to God?
Tithing is a biblical principle that has long been recognized as an act of faith and obedience, acknowledging God’s sovereignty over all things, including our finances. The concept of tithing is introduced in the Old Testament and referenced throughout Scripture.
One of the foundational verses about tithing is found in Leviticus 27:30 (NIV):
“A tithe of everything from the land, whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees, belongs to the Lord; it is holy to the Lord.”
This passage establishes that the tithe is set apart for God, reflecting its spiritual significance.
In Malachi 3:10 (NIV), God calls His people to faithfulness in giving:
“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.”
While this passage speaks of blessings, these may be spiritual, relational, or personal rather than strictly financial. It underscores the faith aspect of giving rather than a guaranteed financial return.
In the New Testament, the emphasis shifts toward the heart and spirit of giving rather than a fixed percentage.
2 Corinthians 9:7 (NIV) states:
“Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”
This suggests that generosity is a matter of personal conviction and faith, rather than a required financial obligation.
Ultimately, tithing is not just about money, but about worship, trust, and stewardship—recognizing God as the source of all blessings and faithfully managing what He has entrusted to us.
